To draw an analogy
From the responses, it sounds like it is Wizards' equivalent of Windows Vista.
Meh.
Just like the north wind, it BLOWS. :P
Too early to tell
I have not used the new system enough to have a legit opinion of it yet.
I need an (Other) Category
I think it is a very different game than traditional D&D.
I haven't played it too much, but enough to get a feel for some of the mechanics. I like how it is a more tactical in combat game and you have the feeling of more you can do. I especially like this for the spell casters.
But the game is so very different that it's apples and oranges.
I believe this is the biggest reason for so much fan hate.
I'll still play my 1st ed., My 3rd and play 4th. They are all experiences in and of themselves.
But I will not touch 2nd ed. What a bunch of money grabbing sell-outs they were to put that edition out just as I had bought all the 1st ed books. =]
Ummm....well....it could be worse, I guess....
I don't particularly care for the way that the game breaks all the noncombat down into skill checks, with the story only there to get you through to the next check. Maybe thats just how I first saw it, but it didn't leave a good taste in my moutn.
