IBM Game of the Month

Game for January: "Le Havre"

Overview:
In Le Havre, a player’s turn consists of two parts: First, distribute newly supplied goods onto the offer spaces; then take an action. As an action, players may choose either to take all goods of one type from an offer space or to use one of the available buildings. Building actions allow players to upgrade goods, sell them or use them to build their own buildings and ships. Buildings are both an investment opportunity and a revenue stream, as players must pay an entry fee to use buildings that they do not own. Ships, on the other hand, are primarily used to provide the food that is needed to feed the workers.

After every seven turns, the round ends: players’ cattle and grain may multiply through a Harvest, and players must feed their workers. After a fixed number of rounds, each player may carry out one final action, and then the game ends. Players add the value of their buildings and ships to their cash reserves. The player who has amassed the largest fortune is the winner.

Event Information

Purpose:
Provide an informal venue for board gaming that is attractive to fringe gamers that work at the IBM Rochester campus. There have been a few people I have talked to that express interest in gaming, but they never really have a good chance to try out gaming, and are intimidated to break into the scene. This session should be one that is easy for a fledgling gamer to be involved in.

Location:
IBM Rochester main cafeteria in the Southwest corner.

Game of the Month:
To keep it friendly to any potential newcomers, I would like to pick one game that we run for an entire month as the primary game. This gives people a chance to both get to learn it on one session, and then later dig deeper to try and become proficient at it during a later session. This should help provide a comfort level for people that are not accustomed to learning new rules all the time. If the owner of the primary game cannot make it, hopefully they can trust it to another Rochester Gamers Community (RGC) member for the days they cannot make it.

Although we will have a primary game that is run every Friday for the month, we will provide additional games to play when more people show up. These games will just be a grab bag. If we have limited space, those that show up first will have first crack at the primary game. If we get enough interest, then maybe we can change to having 2 primary games.

Time Frame:
The meeting is scheduled from 11 AM - 1 PM. Our target games will be limited to those that can complete easily in 90-120 minutes. Will will start shortly after 11:00 as soon as enough people filter in. Meeting notices are sent out to be added to your Lotus Notes calendars.

Community:
Join others and discuss the games in the RGC forums!
