Games to Play After the Turkey

Ah, Thanksgiving. A time to pause and reflect on the many blessings and sources of happiness that one has in their life. Family, friends, assorted neighbors. These are the people we think upon and smile as we gather around the table to feast.

And when you push away from the table this season, patting your stomach and regretting the extra helping of mashed potatoes, think not of the couch and the football game on the television. Rather, gather those around you, after clearing the table, and plunk down a game or two.

Fantasy Flight Games recently published a short article on several games that would be appealing to those digesting their Thanksgiving bird. Not to be one to let a good thing slip by, here are a few more games that would fit the bill.

• Niagara
  A great game to play with the young ones as well as the old fogies. The game board literally tries to push you off the edge into oblivion whilst you frantically try to keep a balance between greed and safety. A fine game to dish out after the pumpkin pie.
• Upwords
  Face it. You won't be moving anywhere fast after all those yams. Best to exercise the mind if you can't the body. Upwords is just like Scrabble, but you get to build on top of other words already in play.
• Monopoly
  A classic stand-by and favorite for those who like to go around and around and around and around collecting small sums of brightly colored currency.
• Rumis
  One part Tetris, one part madness, Rumis will make you think harder than your last Calculus test. Don't be surprised if your Grandma cleans the floor with you. She's a sneaky one...
• Dominion
  If this game was anymore loved by gamers, it would be a pin-up. Seriously, if you haven't tried this game, now is a great time. Easy mechanics and near endless replay, Dominion is a real joy.
• Smallworld
  If you are in desperate need of carnage but need to keep it "family friendly", Smallworld is the game you have been looking for. Tongue-and-cheek genocide with whimsical fantasy art to make you smirk and forget all about driving a race of mystical creatures into extinction.
• The Settlers of Catan
  You either love it or you hate it. Regardless, this is a great game to teach the non-gamers in your life and get them hooked. Trade your wool for bricks and don't forget to make the turkey sandwiches about 2 hours after the meal. Man, I love turkey sandwiches....
